Tokyo is Japan's capital and a growing Asia-Pacific cruise homeport, with ships docking at Yokohama's Osanbashi Pier (45 minutes south) or the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal at Daiba. From Daiba, the Yurikamome rail line reaches central Tokyo in 25 minutes. The Imperial Palace gardens, Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, Shibuya crossing, and the Tsukiji outer market are the classic stops. Mount Fuji excursions are weather-dependent.

• Tokyo is the most populous metropolitan area on Earth, with over 41 million residents in the Greater Tokyo Area as of 2024 — more than the entire population of Canada.
• Originally a small fishing village called Edo, Tokyo rose to prominence in 1603 as the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate; it was renamed Tokyo ('Eastern Capital') only after the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
• Shinjuku Station is the world's busiest train station, while the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line (opened 1927) is the oldest underground metro line in all of Asia.
• Tokyo was the first Asian city to host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics, doing so in 1964, and hosted again in 2021.
