From Seward to Anchorage by Train: The Cruise Connection

Seward is the second cruise gateway to the Alaska interior — but unlike Whittier, the connection to Anchorage runs through the Kenai Peninsula on one of America's most scenic train rides.

Seward is the second cruise gateway to the Alaska interior, sharing the role with Whittier — both port at the head of a fjord, both feed motorcoach and rail transfers to Anchorage and beyond, and both are dominated by Princess and Holland America's land-tour packages. Where Whittier offers the strange single-tunnel road-and-rail connection, Seward offers the Coastal Classic — a 4-hour Alaska Railroad scenic train through the Kenai Peninsula that's a destination in itself.

The Coastal Classic train

The Alaska Railroad operates the Coastal Classic train year-round but with passenger service only during the summer cruise season (mid-May to mid-September). Northbound from Seward, the train:

  1. Departs Seward at 06:00. The train pulls right up to the cruise dock area; passengers can roll their luggage from ship to platform in 5 minutes.
  2. Climbs out of Resurrection Bay along the spectacular Kenai Mountains, with views back to Mount Marathon.
  3. Crosses the Kenai Peninsula divide through Moose Pass and Bear Lake — bear sightings are routine here in late spring.
  4. Joins the eastern shore of Turnagain Arm — a fjord with 30-foot tides, frequent beluga whale sightings, and Dall sheep visible on the cliffs.
  5. Arrives Anchorage at 10:15 — about 4 hours and 15 minutes total, in time for connecting flights or onward transfers to Denali.

The cruise lines sell Goldstar Service seats — upper-deck dome cars with 360° glass roofs, an outside viewing platform, and an upgraded dining service. It's not cheap (around $200+ per person upgrade over standard), but for a cruise passenger it's the difference between "a transfer to the airport" and "the most scenic part of the trip."

In practice, both ports do the same job. Seward's advantage is the Coastal Classic and the scenic Kenai Peninsula transfer; Whittier's advantage is its proximity to Anchorage and (since 2024) its new dual-berth capacity.

What you do in port

If you're a transit passenger (most are), Seward is a quick walk-and-board. If you have a few hours:

  • Alaska SeaLife Center — a 5-minute walk from the cruise dock, this is a marine-research aquarium with sea lions, harbor seals, puffins, and an active research program. It's the highest-rated single attraction in town.
  • Mount Marathon — the iconic peak above the city, host to the famous Mount Marathon Race every July 4th. The lower trail is approachable; the full summit is not a half-day cruise excursion.
  • Exit Glacier (Kenai Fjords NP) — about 30 minutes by car or excursion bus. Walking trails to the glacier face; bear country, take precautions.
  • Resurrection Bay tour boats — half-day Kenai Fjords cruises out of the small-boat harbor, seeing tidewater glaciers, sea otters, and orcas. This is the quintessential Seward day-trip if you have 4+ hours in port.

Practical advice

  • If you're starting or ending a cruise at Seward, the Coastal Classic is the highlight of the transfer, not the inconvenience. Book Goldstar.
  • If your cruise calls Seward as a port (rather than turnaround), you typically have 8–10 hours. Half-day Kenai Fjords boat tours fit.
  • If your transfer to Anchorage runs by motorcoach (some cruise packages do), the Seward Highway is itself one of the most scenic drives in the United States — Turnagain Arm, Beluga Point, the Alyeska valley. Don't sleep through it.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Seward, Alaska?
Seward is on the southern coast of the Kenai Peninsula at the head of Resurrection Bay, about 125 miles south of Anchorage by road or rail. It's a working fishing port and the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad.
Which cruise lines call at Seward?
Primarily Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean. Holland America is the dominant operator, using Seward as a turnaround port for one-way Vancouver↔Seward Inside Passage cruises paired with Denali land-tour packages.
How do passengers get from Seward to Anchorage?
Three options. (1) Alaska Railroad's 'Coastal Classic' train — about 4 hours, scenic. (2) Motorcoach via the Seward Highway — about 2.5 hours. (3) Cruise-line operated 'land tour' coach connections directly to Denali-area lodges. Most cruise-paired transfers use the train or the cruise-line motorcoach.
What is the Coastal Classic train?
The Coastal Classic is the Alaska Railroad's daily summer-season passenger train between Anchorage and Seward, running roughly mid-May through mid-September. It travels along the eastern shore of Turnagain Arm, through Bird Point, past Alyeska, and into the Kenai Peninsula. Goldstar dome cars give 360° views; the trip is about 4 hours each way.
How is Seward different from Whittier as a cruise port?
Both are gateway ports to Anchorage. Seward is further (125 miles vs Whittier's 60), but the connection runs through the Kenai Peninsula and Turnagain Arm, which is much more scenic than the tunnel route into Whittier. Holland America's land-tour packages use both: Princess and a few others use Whittier as their primary, and Holland America uses Seward more often.
