About Galveston
Galveston is the cruise homeport for the Texas Gulf Coast, with ships docking at one of three terminals on Galveston Island about an hour southeast of Houston. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, and MSC run Caribbean and Mexican Riviera itineraries from here. The 1859 Strand Historic District is walkable. Houston's IAH airport is the standard fly-in at 90 minutes north; HOU is closer (60 minutes) for Southwest.
- The Port of Galveston was established in 1825 by the Congress of Mexico following its independence from Spain.
- Galveston temporarily served as the capital of the Republic of Texas after the Texas Revolution of 1836.
- The 1900 Galveston Hurricane remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, with an estimated death toll of 6,000–12,000 people.
- In 1865, General Gordon Granger announced emancipation to some of the last enslaved Americans in Galveston — an event now commemorated as Juneteenth.
- During Prohibition (1919–1933), Galveston became notorious as the 'Free State of Galveston,' a hub for illegal gambling and tourism.
