About La Romana
La Romana is the cruise gateway to the Dominican Republic's southeastern coast, with ships docking at the purpose-built Casa de Campo terminal. The marquee excursion is a tour of Altos de Chavón, a hilltop recreation of a 16th-century Mediterranean village with a Greek-style amphitheater. Day passes to the Casa de Campo resort grant beach and golf access, and the Isla Saona catamaran trip is a standard half-day option.
- La Romana was officially founded in 1897 as an oil town; after 1917 it pivoted entirely to sugar production when a massive sugar mill was built, quickly becoming the economic engine of the region.
- The Central Romana sugar mill, built in 1917, was the only sugar operation in the Dominican Republic not nationalised by dictator Rafael Trujillo during his rule.
- The city is home to the Tabacalera de Garcia factory, one of the largest premium cigar factories in the world, originally relocated from the Canary Islands.
- Casa de Campo, one of the Caribbean's most exclusive luxury resorts, was developed here by Gulf+Western Industries in the 1970s and remains a top cruise destination.
- The nearby Altos de Chavón is a replica 16th-century Mediterranean village hand-built in the 1970s by Gulf+Western craftsmen atop a cliff above the Chavón River, now a living arts community.
